When four faithful friends carried a paralyzed man to Jesus, the house was so crowded that they could not reach Him. They climbed to the roof, opened it, and lowered their friend before the Lord.
Jesus Forgives the Paralytic retells the accounts in Mark 2, Matthew 9, and Luke 5 for young readers. Before He healed the man’s body, Jesus gave him the greater gift: “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” By commanding him to rise and walk, Christ showed that He has the divine authority to forgive sins.
The story then follows that saving word through the cross and resurrection to Easter evening, when the risen Lord entrusted His Church with the Office of the Keys. It teaches that when a called pastor speaks Christ’s absolution, the forgiveness is just as valid and certain, even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us Himself.
