The Catholic Confession: Book II—Special, Part I, Volume I: Article I, Chapters I–II: The Canon and Editions of Scripture

Johann Gerhard’s Confessio Catholica is one of the monumental documentary works of Lutheran Orthodoxy. Written in the final years of his life, it answers the charge that the churches of the Augsburg Confession had abandoned the historic catholic faith and established a new religion.

This first volume of Book II, Special Part I, begins Gerhard’s treatment of the individual articles of faith. He defends the historic distinction between canonical and apocryphal books, examines the integrity of the Hebrew and Greek texts, and treats the Septuagint, Vulgate, biblical translation, and the reading of Scripture by the laity. Translated from the Jena first edition of 1634, this volume includes explanatory and source-critical notes, a glossary, a biographical register, and comprehensive indexes.
